ANGKLUNGS 

The Angklung is an interesting instrument from Indonesia, a part of the traditional Gamelan orchestra.  Made of bamboo, it has a full octave hanging on a stand.  Each note can be played in place on the stand, or removed from the stand & shaken individually, much as a bell choir.  The larger Angklung (top picture) stands about 22 inches high, and has a diatonic octave going up from G below middle C.

THUMB PIANO

Throughout Africa, the thumb piano has many forms & many names--mbira, sansa, kalimba, likemba, & others.  This one is made in South Africa, has 5 notes & a burnt-in design on a wooden board with a gourd sound chamber.

IRON GONGS

These iron gongs are crafted in Cameroon.  The double gong has two different pitches.  However, on each gong, different sounds can be made by striking in different places on the gong.

FARMERS CYMBALS

These cymbals are made of bronze in Nepal, & are fastened together by a leather strap.  They are played with the farmer's flute & damru drum as they march to the temple for morning worship.

GUIROS--A guiro is a scraper, a rhythm instrument with which the sound is made by scraping the wooden piece across a notched or roughened area, or by striking in different areas.  The best sound as a scraper is achieved by holding the instrument by the hind legs and scraping with the large end of the wand.  Scraping from back to front is said to reproduce the mating call of frogs and from front to back is the distress call.  The larger the frog instrument, the lower and deeper the tone.  All of the frog guiros shown below are from Thailand, where they have been made for many years.  Note the beautiful wood grain, and that the color of the wood is highly variable.  No two are identical, either in how they are carved or in the grain and color of the wood, so the one you receive may not look exactly like the picture.

FROG GUIROS

This little frog guiro is only two inches long and gives a quite high pitch which scraped or struck.

CRICKET GUIROS

This cricket is five inches long, and when scraped lightly with the small end of the wand, it sounds just like a cricket.  It is from Thailand.

SINGING BOWL

This remarkable instrument from Nepal is a finely-crafted bronze bowl that produces a haunting, penetrating note that fills a room when the wand is moved slowly & smoothly around the outside rim of the bowl.

KOKARIKAS   NOTE: We are currently out of kokorikas & are seeking a new supplier.

These kokarikas from from Indonesia.  They consist of a number of hardwood blocks strung between two handles, which happen to be carved to look like animals.  The two ends are held in two hands and are moved up and down to produce interesting rhythms.

This kokarika is in the shape of a gecko--we sometimes call it a "geckorika."
